| WHAT is SCADTA? A BRIEF OVERVIEW | ||||
| In 1921, to facilitate domestic airmail delivery of mail originating overseas, the air transport company SCADTA issued postage stamps for the final airmail delivery of letters to the huge interior lands of Colombia. Scadta agents and the Colombian consulates in the foreign countries calculated the rates involved and sold Scadta postage stamps. The stamps served as additional postage for the final delivery of airmail within Colombia. The Scadta stamps were placed to the right of the normal postage stamps from the originating country. To avoid speculation and exchange of stamps between countries, due to currency rate fluctuation, the stamps were handstamped or, beginning in 1923, machine overprinted with a Spanish abbreviation of the local country name. Some countries that each had the exact same values used up to three different overprint types. And some of these same values were also overprinted in different colors. The overprints were created mainly in Barranquilla, Berlin, New York and Copenhagen. From 1923 through March 31, 1926, the Scadta stamps were cancelled in Colombia. Starting April 1, 1926, after confirming correct values were used, the originating country cancelled them instead. Used stamps cancelled by issuing countries are more desirable than those with Scadta cancellations. In many cases the stamps are seen with both cancels, that of the originating country and the Scadta cancel. Also seen are many covers cancelled after April 1, 1926 where the originating country mistakenly did not cancel the stamps which bear only the Scadta cancellation. | ||||
